Ahhh, I love the smell of promo in the morning …
If you’ve been listening to the Ctrl:Alt:TheBeat radio shows on Purple Radio or have seen me live recently, you’ll probably have heard me drop tunes from both of the reprobates responsible for the Dope Horn EP, as I’ve been rinsing both tOtALcULt’s Hardcore Cramp and Lebrosk’s amazing I Got You Got The Ooh Wee for a few months now. Imagine my delight when the guys sent me a review copy of their latest offering.
The EP consists of two original tunes, one by each artist, which is then remixed by the other. First up is tOtALcULt / Raging Horn which sets the tone for the EP with a flurry of bossa style bongos and a particularly trippy Gene Harris sample before kicking off into a storming big band-esque horn line with some tasty hip hop vocal samples and a smidge of beatboxing scattered liberally around to top it off. The Lebrosk remix starts in a storm of scratches and odd vocal snippets including a slightly unnerving woman’s laugh, picking the tempo up a little into ‘bouncy dancefloor’ territory. It even manages to squeeze a Thunderbirds sample in there -Result!
The second original on the EP, Lebrosk / Dope is an instant winner for me as it lifts the vocal from the properly old skool Dimples D / Sucker DJs and has a wonderful guitar line over a quality break and a bassline that reminds me of early Daft Punk. The tOtALcULt remix is an absolute b boy monster and I reckon it’s probably my pick of the EP – I can almost see the breakers spinning on the dancefloor when I hear this one. The guitar line has been chopped and sliced, and the slightly distorted kick drum is a joy.
To listen to a preview of the EP yourself, check out it out below, and if it rings your bell pick it up on the Cult Music label from the 13th May here
