This seems to be becoming a little bit of a habit doesn’t it – hope you’re enjoying me excursions into sound. Remember, the only rule is that the tunes has to be new to my ears this week …
Shall we?
It’s a been a while since we’ve had some good, old fashioned, neck-snappin hip-hop on ToT hasn’t it? Back in the day barely a week went by without my finding some of that boom-bap goodness, but it’s been a while.
Thankfully Phife Dawg is here to save the day – or at least he was until his untimely passing early on last year – with this track Nutshell. Built over a cracking beat and two bass notes, with a few key stabs, this shows you how simple great hip-hop can be.
(oooh, just found out the track is a Dilla beat … guess that explains why it kicks so much arse)
HT to Powercut of Funk from the Trunk Fame – I first heard this track on his ever- awesome King of The Beats show on invader.fm
It never rains but it pours and the second track this week is MORE hip-hop, this time from R.A. The Rugged Man, whose Definition of a Rap Flow is bringing the 80’s back- seriously check the video, Donkey Kong, Karate Kid, The Blues Brothers, hell they’ve even got guys busting out the running man and the worm …
Interesting to note that there’s a version of this track from RA’s protege A-F-R-O in 2014
(edit: turns out the RA did a competition using this beat, which A-F-R-O won …)
Last one up this week is a slice of classic house, which I was pointed out by reggae legend, Mr Benn – proper chuggy number from Ce Ce Rogers, this is Someday. I know it’s an antique, but I can’t recall ever hearing it before …

I liked the third one – CE CE Rodgers.
