Three on a Thursday #3

(There’s a tongue twister for you)

Ahoy all! Three in three weeks – aren’t you lot lucky!

To be honest I’m slightly surprised that I’ve not been my usual slack self on this, but here you are, three more nuggets to get you through Thursday, and warmed up for the weekend.

Lopez – Analogue Excursions Vol. 1

On this, the latest in the so far storming output of Keep Up! Records the clue is in the name, with the boys from Lopez taking the sound of last year’s Zapping EP, toning down the Disco, and walloping the big button marked ‘Synth Overdrive’.

The opening tabla samples and squelchy heavy chug of the opening track Frutika sets the tone for what you can expect on this five track EP,  whilst the next track actually manages to go deeper, with the belching bassline under cut up cello lines of Wo almost hitting dubstep territory.

Next up, JP3 starts with a tweaking bounce, before it brightens with a swirling high line and filtered horns, before my pick of the bunch, Kiera, switches it up the tempo a notch with the breathy female vocal snippets, scratches and hand claps having something of the FlyLo about them. Finally Kongo Beats finishes you in a wall of metallic synth pulses with silky stings and snare-esque clicks sliding over the top.

The absence of all but the most minimal of vocal lines leaves you free to revel in the finely wrought structure of the beats, and appreciate the depth and layering of the synth programming. As the press blurb accompanying this release “the EP showcases Lopez’s misspent youth in the Asuncion, and misspent adulthood in the studios of South London”, and I can truly believe that these tunes are a labour of love, being both well crafted, but not unapproachable in the way that some instrumental EPs can be.

Lopez / Analogue Excursions Vol. 1 is available digitally from  March/April 2011 , with a best of combined with tracks from the forthcoming Volume 2 available on vinyl from those nice chaps at Keep Up!.

Three on a Thursday #2

Second week into this little experiment and, as the abuse hasn’t been too severe, I thought I’d go rummaging again to see what I could find for you lot this time. Please find enclosed three more prime cuts that are new to me, and maybe to you as well.

If you like what you hear, pop and see guesting with DJ Vallee, from Bristol’s Finest Funkateers, Funk from the Trunk, smashing it up at Mr Wolf’s from very late this Saturday to the early hours of Sunday morning, where the flyer says we’ll be serving you “good old-fashioned funk & soul, classic hip-hop, and all those funky party breaks & mash-ups that keep the party rolling” – best leave the Perry Como at home then …

Right, pimping over, on to the tunes!

Ctrl:Alt:TheBeat with Sherlock Ohms ~ 1st Feb ’11

One week on from when it was first broadcast on Purple Radio, here’s a bit of bassline wobbliness, some Ghetto Funk, and a fistful of mellow hiphop for your enjoyment from this fortnights show. Including tunes from Kormac, J Dilla, Stickybuds, and a lovely little number *finally* released by Mr Sus

Enjoy!

(Update – I’ve removed this from Soundcloud, as I’ve only got so much space, but it’s available on Postbocks here)

Three on a Thursday #1

I was having a blog related quandary the other day – I know four posts in is a little early for existential crises – but I was struck by the thought.  What this site is here for?

The initial idea was to have this as a on-line Electronic Promotion Kit, essentially somewhere I could point people when I was pushing for gigs, with mixes, a bio, some press shots and the like. I was also going to have links to the shows that I do on Purple Radio.

Thing is, it might be a little sparse at times, so I thought,  what could I do to come up with more quality content? Then I realised I spend loads of my free time scrubbing through new releases and am often asked by mates where tunes have come from, what labels they’ve been released by, etc. and then it struck me – I should spread the love, and what better way to do that than to round up a few of my favourite cuts and chuck them to you in time to warm you up for the weekend?

BEHOLD!  Three on a Thursday !

Some tunes are new, some are old ones I’ve only just discovered, some will be upbeat, some a bit more mellow – the only unifying factor is that I’ll have picked them up at some point over the  week, I like ’em and I’ll do my best to put them up on a Thursday for you to have a butchers at.

Early Morning Session on Big Chill FM recorded live at The Big Chill ’10

Here are the remaining two hours of tunes I played out on Big Chill FM at last years festival. They were played from 6-am, so are so chilled they’re almost horizontal – everything from Brian Eno to Massive Attack, and Nina Simone to Madlib.

It’s broken into two one hour chunks, and there seems to be a lack of a tracklisting for the first hour, but I’m sure I can piece it together is you’re interested.

Many of the other artists who graced the radio with their tunes can be found on the Big Chill Radio channel over on Mixcloud

Shameless Pimping Alert

Over of the summer, I, and a bunch of fellow Purple Radio reprobates were invited to play in the bars and on the stages of the Festinho Festival, held at Hinwick House in the glorious Bedfordshire countryside. It’s a great little festival, entirely run by volunteers, with all profits going to the Brazilian kids charity, the ABC Trust. If you want to donate click here

During the course of said amazing weekend, I was waylaid my a certain Mr Neil Cocker, proprietor of Dizzyjam – Music Merchandise to the stars – who took advantage of my drunken state, and press-ganged me into getting some tshirts done via his website. With a face like this you can see why I did as I’m told …

Neil 'The Rage' Cocker

Scary T-Shirt Vendor

I think they turned out quite well, and if you’d like to peruse the virtual aisles in my shop you are welcome to. First person I see wearing one gets a beer on me.

They also do Purple Radio tees and hoodies as well, as designed by the talented Dr Jimble

Afternoon Session on Big Chill FM recorded live at The Big Chill ’10

Just realised I had a couple of links to the Big Chill FM shows I did,  kindly arranged by the wonderful people at The Big Chill Festival.

This one is a lazy little sunny afternoon collection which was originally broadcast as the gates to the Festival opens. There’s lots more good stuff from many of the artists who appeared on the radio station over the course of the weekend on the Big Chill FM Mixcloud channel
