Three on a Thursday #170

Ah, it’s time to relax.  You know what that means.  A glass of wine, your favourite easy chair,  And of course, three tracks, on time for once, from your favourite beardy Bristol bloke. (Noooo, I’ve not been listening to The Offspring and reliving my youth whilst drinking wine. Much)

I heard this the other day, and I think it summarises pretty much every asinine request I’ve ever had whilst playing out  – aside from the “ere can my mate spit bars over this track you’re playing – ‘es well good”, which was answered with “no I think that the highly paid MC on the record is doing a fantastic job and doesn’t need any help”

JFB and Beardyman, thank you for highlighting the pain of us jobbing and occasional record wranglers via the means of breakbeat nonsense in No Requests

Next up is me attempting to bring a little love to your cold, cold hearts …

DJ Format is one of those still keeping the fires of old school b-boy friendly hip-hop alive and well  – his selections are superlative, his beats, brain-melting and his production wizardry bring pure fire to the dancefloor.

He’s just dropped a charity 7”, The Meeting/He’s Back, and it’s a cracker. All instrumental samples are from The Meters, either from work under their own name, or as backing to Lee Dorsey, Betty Harris or Willie West, with a couple of additions on the vocals from Matata, and what’s more all for charity-

Copies have sold out and  it’s blocked from resale by Discogs (take that you evil record flippers), but a repress is due early next year, so keep ’em peeled!

Last up is the result of a little ‘virtual’ dusty fingered work. La Da Da by Dynamic Concept sounds like someone swallowed the entire back catalogue of Bootsy Collins and Sly Stone and had a crack themselves – everything from the burbling bassline to the snapping drums to the ‘slightly shouty choir’ vocal from the band, who with a little bit of digging I spotted are Edwin Starrs backing group …
