Three on a Thursday #167

So, it’s been a while …

What with one thing and another – ok, two of the things are the kids who’ve needed entertaining for the last 6 weeks, and another is my propensity to spend the last 3 Thursdays stuck in a field with no signal, meaning not much time for digging and less for tunes.

As an extra special reward for this, and for the first time in over 160 Three on a Thursday’s, I’m going to double up.

Yes, you heard me.

The tune is barely recognisable form the original – simple low end piano loops, big fat 80s tom drum beats and the vocals mutated into an even more ethereal ghostly chant, flitting in and out of focus, echoing and repeating in and amongst the urgent instrumentation, totally shifting the melody away from the strident synth line which defined the original.

Bloody lovely stuff (and cheers to Guey for the heads up)

More modern disco tinged remixes for this next track, this time from one of my favourite selectors in the UK, all round party starter Greg Wilson, in a collaboration with dub wizard Henry Greenwood, both of whom have featured on the blog before.

Marshall Hain’s Dancing in the City is a bit of a classic, and this pairs respin brings it bang up to date with a meandering pulsing mids, glissading highs and shakers a-go-go

We’re deep in the disco this week, with the third track definitely having something of the Balearic sunset to it. I can just imagine being somewhere on a beach at the end of the day, listening to the Larry Heard’s Missing You (Larry’s Jazz Café Mix) and getting my groove on. Shame the weather in the UK has turned chilly right now – I’d need my thermals on.

4^th (that’s an odd one to write in a ToT …) is a flashback to early noughties Breaks. Y’know, when it was still good.

Apollo 440, probably best known for their theme to Lost In Space which was honestly the best things about the rebooted film, hook up with the ‘world famous’ Beatnuts, all remixed by the Stanton Warriors on Dude Descending a Staircase (Stanton Warriors Vocal Club Mix).

So far so blah, but check that bouncing bassline that underpins a classic breakbeat drumline. GORGEOUS!

One of the somewhat connectivity-deprived fields I was stuck in was the ever-wonderful Shambala. The last act of the festival I saw was Dr Syntax (complete with DJ Fingerfood on the decks, who played on the same bill as many many moons ago at one of the early Upfests, before parenting made DJing difficult)

I have a stack of love for Benny Huge, and not just because we look almost like twins, and Ice Cold form his new release with epic beatwrangler, Pete Cannon strikes a chord with the almost 40 faded b-boy in me …

Last one this time round is keeping it on hometown hip-hop tip, in the form of local larrakin Res One and Inja with Illinformed on the beat. Check the fat jazz horn loop, and see if you can spot the legendary Slix chicken in the video. C’est Bon!
