A little late, but I think its taken that long for my fingers to defrost after this weeks cycling, as it’s been ridiculously cold for February round these parts … and yet despite all the snow, we can’t even build a proper snowman as it’s too dry. Broken Britain I tells ya!
One of my favourite early sources of ‘odd’ funk for me to play out was the utterly brilliant Souljazz New Orleans Funk compilation – it turned my ear to the slightly Cajun, slighty scuzzy funk and soul from the Deep South, from artists like Eddie Bo, The Gaturs, and Ernie and the Top Notes.
Professor Shorthair has mined that rich seam on this (wonderfully green) track, combining Lee Dorsey and the with some choice hip-hop beats, cuts and vocal samples, from Ludacris to Slick Rick, to give us Get Out My Life, Woman, a delightful funk piano led with a cracking scratch and cut intro. Dancefloor catnip.

A little bit more funk for the next number, this time from the more 80’s sleazy end of things.
Kali Uchis is channelling Childish Gambino’s wonderful Redbone on After the Storm, combining bass bounce legend, Bootsy Collins and bug eating ex-OFWGKTA head honcho Tyler, The Creator in a slightly woozy hip-pop, future soul cut
Bloody odd video as well, with Bootsy as a cereal box comic character, and Tyler in a suburban lawn … whatever the director was on must’ve been good …

Last up is a recommendation from my man Mach V,
BUNKR produce wonderfully detailed little nuggets of chuggy, woozy, slightly electro-y goodness, quite reminiscent of early Orbital without being banging, or The Orb without being totally off its cake – pick of the E.P. for me is Tears at Dawn.
