Apologies for the break in service – been busy parenting. When the little darlings are being swine about going to sleep at an even vaguely reasonable hour, I’m utterly lacking in energy to write.
Still, back now …
First track up this week hits you right between the eyes with a boom of Sly and the Family Stone channeling funk sauce awesomeness. Back In Business is definitely a statement of intent from Lack of Afro. You can almost hear the afro hairdos on the backing vocalists which kick the whole thing off, before vocal duties are fired up a notch by long term henchmen Wax and Herbal T. Love it.
Next up comes courtesy of John Hendicott. I’m new to Miguel, but if Come Through and Chill is anything to go by, I should really listen to more. Built around a little spanish-esque guitar loop and a simple kick and clap rhythm this is a lovely little slice of hip-hop steeped Future Soul

I’m a fan of Edgar Wright’s stuff, from Shaun of the Dead, via Hot Fuzz to Baby Driver – one of my films of the year, largely for the killer soundtrack, so when I saw he has a series of curated playlists up on Spotify, I dived in. There’s some good stuff on there, a little jangly indie in parts for me, but then this track popped out – slightly surprised that it’s by Paul Simon, as I never consider really listening to his stuff – he’s firmly fixed in my memory as existing solely in my mums early 80s panda via the Gracelands album, but Wristband off his new album Stranger to Stranger which seems to channel some Haitian Fight Song era Mingus might make me reconsider that.
