A day late, mostly due to kids who refuse to go to sleep, but here none the less …
I’ve been a fan of Wax Tailor since I first heard Hope and Sorrow, and if you have the good taste to like that effortless continental cool, jazzy hip hop steez that he does so well, you simply must listen to L’Orange. He’s dropped a new album last week, The Ordinary Man, and it’s stunner. The hook track for me is Parlour Magic, all Jazz samples, sliced and looped with a crackling beat underneath. Simple, yet brilliant
Friends of mine, who are faaaar more in the know when it comes to this sort of thing, have made mention of Max Cooper, and thanks to a cracking little playlist from the Echaskech peeps I found their Strange Attractor remix his tune of Chaotisch Serie, and I don’t think I’ve heard many more eerie, atmospheric tunes in many a year. Oceans of skittering static over a simple glossy tune, with a more depth than the Marinas Trench. Epic
Last up this week is the curveball …
I often check Mr Black’s wonderfully selected Spiritland sessions as they’re a minefield of eclectic tunes – several recent ‘odd ones’ have come from there, and this is very much in the same vein.
I was (am?) a big Nirvana fan. In Bloom was a favourite track of mine when I was 14/15. This cover from Sturgill Simpson is a beautifully bizarre belter
