Three on a Thursday #147

21057014_1391284980986998_684006660_oBit of a frantic one as I’m in the process of packing up to go to Shambala tomorrow – I’ll dive straight into the tunes!

It’s been a while since I’ve heard any new stuff from Dirty Dike, and while this isn’t newly released, coming as it does off a  limited edition 12″ he dropped last year. He’s  found a few more at home and advertised them on twitter, so I’ve only just heard it.

The guitar sample on Waste of Beer is utterly lovely, and the tijuana brass loop is smooth as hell. The lyrics are Dike at his wittiest, but are very much from his ‘angry at women’ stage … if you’re easily offended, (hell, even if it’s pretty hard to offend you) don’t click on this one. If you like it, there are half a dozen copies on 12″ at his bandcamp as of 7ish this evening.

Next track is from soul legend, Lee Fields who is apparently Coming Home, on this latest cut from his Special Night album. Loving the drum sound on this one – sounds like the entire track could’ve been cut in the early 60’s

It  seems somehow appropriate in the week of the KLF related shenanigans in Liverpool to feature a related group, The Orb.

Originally consisting of one half of the KLF, Jimmy Cauty, with Dr Alex Paterson, The Orb are widely credited with inventing the ambient house genre, taking influence from the likes of Brian Eno and Kraftwerk and infusing them with dub, spoken word and sound effect snippets, creating ever evolving soundscapes,

Keiichi Suzuki’s Satellite Serenade (The Orb’s Trans Asian Express Mix)  is a prime example of this, being the best art of 15 minutes long, starting with a random Sir David Attenborough sample from the 1983 environmentally-themed musical “Yanomamo” before twisting sinuously along a synth line with shimmering bells, water droplets and skittering hi-hats driving you forward.
