Woah, almost forgot about this this week – kids being a nightmare to get to go to sleep and only sat down after 9pm – fortunately the prep work was good and I’ve got three lovely lovely slices of musical gold for you to have go on – ONWARDS!
This edit from Scrimshire feels appropriate as the first track this week, given the truly stupendous tease of the intro, as hinted by naming it Scrimshire’s Waaaaaaait For it, Edit
Bonus points to anyone who manages to work out what the track is in the 50 or so seconds …
It is of course the inestimable Soul II Soul with Back to Life
In terms of raw, balls out funk, there are few doing it better than Marta Ren and the Groovelvets. I’ve heard a couple of their joints over the last couple of months and they’re *serious* stompers – I remember the effect it had on the dance floor at the Old Market Assembly a month or so back
With a driving beat, tight horns and that voice, this track is punchy as hell. I’m Not Your Regular Woman indeed
For late night tripped out dubbiness you can’t do too much better the Sherwood and Pinch – their debut album, Late Night Endless became a regular round our way, and they’ve just dropped their second, Man vs Sofa. The first track I’ve heard is Lies, featuring vocals from everyones favourite oddball dub wizard, the Upsetter himself, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry.
