Three on a Thursday #128

Ahhhh, the computer nerd in me likes the number 128, so I’m kinda glad we made it to this one.

This weeks we’ve got some hip-hop (quelle supris), and a sprinking of reggaeish dubsteppy nonsense, and some funked up Soul Sisters

All  aboard!

First up this week is the return of one of my favourite hip-hop duo’s of recent years, the crate digging genuis DJ Format, and this weather-ballon lunged MC, Abdominal.

I first stumbled across these miscreants in the hallowed racks of the legendary and now sadly turned-into-yet-another-bloody-coffee-shop Imperial Records, where I found their debut ‘Music for the Mature B-Boy’ which if you haven’t heard you *really* should.

It’s been a while since these boys have released anything, but there’s an album in the works, Still Hungry, which features this huge pile of swirling Hammond chords over a rattling 130bpm skittering break called Diamond Hammer

(I’m fairly surely the bassline at 2.02 is the same as the Chemical Brothers used in Block Rockin’ Beats? Just me?)

I can’t remember how on earth I stumbled across this next one – I was rummaging around on Soundcloud or some such and found my way to the Don Mescals Soul Sisters Remixed.

After some judicious rummaging, I pulled out some belters, the best of which (ok, the best which I didn’t already have) is probably this reboot of Ella Fitzgerald‘s cover of Creams Sunshine of Your Love, done by Cee-roo

Last up this week is a mellow wee number which comes to me courtesy of Bristol Reggae big boy, Mr Benn.

Been a fan of Gardna’s flow for a while and this slightly dubsteppy-but-with-a-touch-of-tropical-bass-late-night-bidness tune he’s done with Kreed is a rather appropriately titled Midnight – out soon on Boom sound Recordings
