Another swing, another miss … apologies for the tardiness, it was my little girl’s 1st birthday yesterday (Happy Birthday Charlotte!) so I was utterly exhausted after chasing around a room full of ~1 years olds.
Meh, enough with the excuses, on with the music.
I’ll admit it, I have a problem. It’s commonly know as ‘rapperphobia’
It manifests itself as an irrational twitch whenever I receive promo that describes the artist as a rapper. Emcee I can take, as it conjures up memories of Q-Tip, J-Live, hell, even Slick Rick, but rapper? Makes me think of muppets like The Game and Fiddy.
However, I’m glad I made an exception in this case.
JVizZ dropped a a million questions into my inbox the other day. No seriously, it was a track called A Million Questions and it’s rather nice. Based around a rather discordant piano loop with a seriously smooth flow hitting points on Trayvon Martin, dumbed down hiphop, ripoff record labels and like it’s well worth a go.
Next up is a track which contains more slices of other peoples records than many mixes. Jackatak’s take on Lewis Parker’s Shark Instrumental samples the hell out of Jaws, as well as a whole host of classic funk and hiphop cuts from James Brown to The Herbaliser. Lovely jubbly
Last this week is a thexeh wee number from those Renegades of Jazz, rebooted by Printempo. Built around a wicked little mouth organ loop, with a shuffling snapping beat and a looped up vocal this is a nice little end of a night number. Hell it ever has jazz flute! Eat your heart out Ron Burgundy! You Better Run!
