Wow, second week back after my brief hiatus and I”ve dropped the ball already!
I’ll blame a teething one year old for waking me up so often this week, I was losing track of what day it was …
Meh, one day late, the tunes still bump.
First up this week is the debut single from those Bristol boys, The Allergies, better known to their mothers as Rackabeat and Moneyshot (?)
Big Star does a belting job of taking the Albert King standard I’ll Play The Blues For You – which happens to be an all time favourite late night whiskey drinking song of mine – whacking it through a blender and sticking the piece back together in a differnet order. I’m, sure that’s how it works isn’t it?
They’ve managed to do a fine balancing act, updating this with a hip-hop sensibility, but keeping the ‘soul’ in a soul tune. Top Darts boys! The B-side, Symphonics, is pretty tasty too, harking back to the kind of stuff you’d expect to hear from turn of the century Grand Central act, Aim, which is no bad thing at all.
Next up is keeping it UK hiphop, but going back to the royalty. A collaboration between Skitz, Rodney P, Roots Manuva, with guest spots for Darrison and Solo Banton?
YES PLEASE!
Never is quality little grinder, giving it big licks about fresh young MCs who are in it for the wrong reasons. Wrap your ears around this to hear the big boys say so.
Drops on the 7th May on Dragon Drop records,
Epic vid as well …
Last up this week is a fantastic remix of Foreign Beggars and Beardyman’s tune Oh! by Brightonian boy, Benji Boko. To be honest, for all the worthy ‘almost every sound you hear in this track is from a human voice’ of the original, it was lacking something, and Benji seems to have found it.
Hat tip to DJ Cheeba from dropping this in his support slot for DJ Numark last week – epic as ever.
This is released at the end of the month. Keep your eyes peeled.
