It’s that time of the week again – Three on a Thursday! (I know, I know, try to contain yourselves …). This week is on a little bit a hip-hop tip, with a little broken beat shuffler at the end.
If you like the sounds I chuck up here every week, then you could always pop down and see me do my thing at either Timbuk2 on Friday with Teddy G and Rob Helps, or if you busy that night, I’m also at Mr Wolfs on Saturday from midnight – I’ll buy a beer for anyone making both nights!
Anyway, onwards!
The first couple of tunes this week are sort of related, in that I stumbled across them because of some random Soundcloud spam.
First up, and straight of the badlands of .. erm … Cambridge (I know, it’s not exactly ghetto-tastic ) is hip-hop head, Imperial Beats. It’s well worth having a rummage around his page, but I reckon the pick of his ‘original’ productions is Hope, a bouncy little positive hip-hop number featuring American MC Ben Z, with more than a touch of the J-Live style production I really get on with.
Quite a few tracks on Imperial Beats page are remixes of a chap called Theory Hazit, who has the kind of lazy hip-hop flow I absolutely love. I’d never heard of him before, so intrigued, I had a bit of a google around, and came across a stack of youtube videos of his work. My favourite so far is this one, called Deep Breaths , and the combination of beat and skate video properly hit that West Coast vibe …
Last up this week is a corking little remix of Kraak & Smaak / Let’s Go Back (feat Romanthony) by the supremely talented Hint. The original is a little bit deep into disco country for my taste, but this tweak adds a little wobble and a nice little hand drum line to push thoroughly into broken beat territory.
