Wow – three months one from the first one of these, and I’m still going strong. What’s more I have a few days off work coming from today, so hopefully you’ll get a couple of ‘proper’ mixes from me, as I’ve got a bit of time – I do spoil you lot sometimes, don’t I …
If you’re enjoying the weather we’ve been having recently I’d shamelessly pimp “recommend” my last Ctrl:Alt:The Beat show for you, plenty of summery vibes to be found on there…
Right – on to the records.
The first tune this week is definitely the result of me having 11 days off in a row after today and the sun shining continuously since I’ve been back in the UK. Turntable Dubbers (feat Brother Culture & Campina Reggae) / Everybody Get Lively Now hits the sweet spot between ‘dancefloor burner’ and ‘skanking reggae’. Add in a wobbly bassline and some scratching, and I’m sold.
The remixes by Blend Mishkin (who was featured on Three on a Thursday last week) and Dreadsquad, are also properly tidy.
Out now on Cast-a-Blast and available here
Next up is everyone’s favourite Northern Funk Monkeys, Smoove & Turrell
Taken from their upcoming album Eccentric Audio, Slow Down is a lovely little midtempo funk groover, with picked bass and a sublime vocal from John Turrell mark this out as a sure-fire summer winner – there’s a cracking little video for it as well
If you like this one then come and see Smoove in action in Bristol with the Funk From The Trunk kids at Big Chill Bristol this Sunday.
Lastly for this week is a remix of Pulpfusion from longtime friend of the blog, Ewan Hoozami. Sex, Drums, Funk and Roll another stonker from the gingerest producer in Bristol, with a healthy dose of massive organ (fnar), sax stabs and a wicked drum break this should get your feet moving, quite frankly if it doesn’t, you’re probably dead.
