Three on a Thursday #8

It’s come around already – it’s Thursday, the weekend is almost here, and it’s time for the lastest rundown of ‘stuff that new to me’.

I think the tunes that I selected last week are probably directly responsible for the glorious run of weather we’ve had over the last few days – feels like spring has sprung around here, so there are a couple of upbeat little numbers and a late night end-of-nighter for you this week. Should be an ideal part of the soundtrack for any brave BBQers this weekend. I expect an invite by the way …

The original Roni Size cut that forms the basis of this first tune provokes particularly happy memories for me, as it was Brown Paper Bag from the New Forms album and the ensuing gig that I was dragged to by a mate at Cardiff Uni that was pivotal in changing me from being a narrowminded little metaller and opening my until then rather blinkered eyes into the full awesomeness of what music could be – specifically by inflicting mental drum and bass on me until the fire alarms got set off.

The version used here is done by Me&You, better known as Tru Thoughts primo Rob Luis and one of his signings, TM Juke. It’s available on the as-far-as-I-know rather limited edition ‘Music For Birthdays’ album, and if you can find a copy, you should definitely snag it, as it’s fantastic. DJ Soo has taken it’s skanking beat and strapped a classic slice of Dancehall Reggae vocalism onto it in the form of Beenie Man’s Dude to create Brown Paper Dude.

It’s rare that a ‘Three on a Thursday’ goes past without some sort of Bristolian link, and this week is no different. Pseudonym Beats, the new project from beatmakers Jagos & Nikill have released their first album, entitled Shadow Puppets (free download here) and its rather tasty.

Nestled amongst the tracks is this little gem, Organised Crime. It nicely pairs up a slightly wonky bassline with skittery percussion and Bonobo-esque strings, with the finishing touches being added by the atmospheric film sample and chanted vocal lines. Perfect late night music.

Finally, Dagwood / Go Like This refreshes the wonderful-if-overplayed tune from Deelite / Groove Is in the Heart, slashing and cutting it up before plastering it with a twisting filtered hi-hat line and vocal from those one-hit-wonders Tag Team / Whoomp! (There It Is).
