BOING said Zebedee – the big man is back with yet more fresh (to his ears anyway) tunes!
This week I’ve got a proper little Nu Funk burner, a modern Northern Soul-ish number and Hip Hop about the trials and tribulations of a superhero for you to get your lugholes round.
If you like this series and want to hear ’em churned out live, or even buy me a pint by way of thanks for introducing all these wonderous tunes, check the ‘Gigs’ listing at the top of the page. Your next opportunity is tonight at The Pipe & Slippers with Flipzilla, and then again tomorrow with those crazy simians Monkey Chuckle, at The Golden Lion.
First up this week is Fab Samperi / Listen Up, and it’s a cracking spot by my fellow record botherer, Mr Roy Strong.
With a backing vocal harking back to Motown, a Hammond organ straight out of the Doors playbook and a stomping drum beat, if you don’t tap your feet to this you’re clinically dead.
Listen up for their début album, Power Bossa, hitting the shelves soon – I have a feeling it’ll be worth it.
If you’ve not heard of the Fort Knox Five by now, you must’ve been living under a rock for the last few years. Pioneers of the Nu-funk movement, and regularly showing up on my Ctrl:Alt:TheBeat show, they’ve been releasing a stack of tweaks and edits over the last few months in a series titled ‘DC’s Finest Remint’.
Their latest mashes up James Brown-esque horns over the top of the vocals from founder of the Zulu Nation and Hip-Hop Godfather, Afrika Bambaataa, to give you The Sax Pusher vs. Bambaataa (DC’s Finest Remint) a properly bumping little funk burner.
Even better, it’s a free download from their site!
Lastly comes a tune I picked up on the recommendation of possibly the tallest, if not the largest beat maker in Bristol, VeeKay.
It’s not everyday you hear an MC giving you the realness … well at least not of the day-to-day trials of being a Superhero, but then I doubt Illus and the Krate Krusaders are your usual blinged out rap numptys. This tune (and the accompanying awesome video) is The Mask
