It’s Thursday, it’s around lunchtime, it must be time for the next installment of Three on a Thursday!
This week there’s some Jazz, some Hip-Hop and a little bit of Bristolian Downtempo to enjoy, so no more blathering, on with the tunes.
It’s rare that a ‘Three on Thursday’ goes past without some form of a Bristolian twist and this week is no different with my first track coming from the newly released E.P. by the The Beekeepers, Ascending Change. Better known as Boca 45 and Parker, two of the best party starters in town, their first offering Bee Funk was packed to the rafters with absolutely party bangers and hasn’t left my bag from the moment it came out.
This time the boys have changed it up a little, with more depth and atmospherics than their previous offering – so much so that it sounds like a less claustrophobic Massive Attack. Current cut of choice is Sea Change
Given his storming back catalogue, you’d expect Smoove to have taste, and he proves us right by having signed the Renegades of Jazz to his Wass label. I’ve been a fan for a while, having picked up Cascade and the Karabine E.P., and now they’re back with Get a Wiggle On blending a mumbling scat vocal with blazing horn stabs with a shuffling breakbeat to cap it off.
The last one for this week is an older tune, but a new one to me, from France’s The Incredible Funk League. With a vocal from Brand Nubian’s Sadat X, combined with snapping snares, some top quality scratching and a smoking jazz trumpet solo, On &On is a cracking little upbeat funk/hip-hop crossover number.
